Lawyer Well-Being: Tools to Reduce Stress and Vicarious Trauma

CLE credits: 1 Mental Health/Substance Use (to be applied for)

November 8 - Lawyer Well-Being: Tools to Reduce Stress and Vicarious Trauma. Many members of the legal community have found the last three years incredibly challenging, stressful, and bordering on unmanageable some days. In a vocation already replete with stress, current circumstances are increasing the level of stress, burnout, and symptoms of mental health conditions for practitioners as well as affecting the functioning of clients. The rates of burnout and mental health conditions have increased exponentially since 2019. Before the pandemic, lawyers already experienced mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, and problematic substance use, much more frequently than non-lawyers. It is more important than ever to learn to reach out for help for oneself and increase our comfort with expressing concern for others.

Lawyers who attend this 60-minute presentation will:

  • Increase awareness of the challenges lawyers face related to stress, anxiety, depression, and substance use;
  • Consider factors that prevent lawyers from seeking help for mental health conditions and explore their own role in helping to reduce stigma, foster acceptance, increase vulnerability, and encourage help-seeking behavior;
  • Learn about resources to support ourselves and each other during challenging times including how to reach out to others about whom we are concerned;
  • Learn coping skills, protective factors, and self-care strategies to support our own well-being especially when working in a fast-paced, high intensity environment.
